  • Des Moines

Des Moines, is the largest city in Iowa and the state's capital. Des Moines also offers a full complement of big city attractions including ballet, opera, symphony, and theater performances. Downtown, visitors will find a concentration of restaurants, bars, and nightclubs. Area golf courses and parks provide outdoor recreation opportunities. At Saylorville Lake, a 26,000-acre lake northwest of Des Moines, camping, sailing, motor boating, swimming, and fishing are popular activities.

Fort Dodge is a Des Moines River town with a gypsum mining, industry, and agricultural economy. Fort Dodge Historical Foundation and Fort Dodge Museum and Frontier Village preserve original and replicated structures from the fort's early pioneer days. Visitors can explore a trading post, log home, one-room school, jail, blacksmith shop, and general store.

Waterloo is an industrial city and home to John Deere tractor. The Cedar River flows through the middle of Waterloo. To the west, Cedar Falls is a university town. The metropolitan area provides a variety of entertainment and outdoor recreational activities for east central Iowa. Both Waterloo and Cedar Falls have downtown shopping and entertainment districts. The Cedar River and many small area lakes provide fishing, boating, sailing, windsurfing, and swimming spots.
