Agriculture meets culture in Iowa's largest city and capital, Des Moines, a riverside hub that boasts an events calendar of fairs and fine arts festivals and offers easy access to natural attractions and gambling venues.
Although this area is centered around a river, it has a forceful desert energy, the mountains rising up dry and forbidding in the near distance. The river itself is in Amargosa Canyon, which breaks up the dryness with dense vegetation, some of which forms hanging gardens of a kind. The river is shallow, but has a small waterfall nonetheless. Birds and bats are common sights here. This area is closed to vehicles and is best explored by foot or horseback.
